Richard Service

Richard Service

Richard Service grew up on a farm near Clinton Michigan, where his family had originally settled in 1832. He attended Michigan State University, where he studied general agriculture, and took some forestry courses. Richard started his venture into the forestry business as a junior in high school. wanting to purchase some walnut trees, so he went to the Clinton High School library to try to determine figuring board footages in trees. His first purchase was for 5 walnut trees, and the price was $150. Upon discussing the price with Mr. Leo Robison, he stated "I thought that other guy that gave me a price was a little low?" This made Richard apprehensive that he had paid too much. But the transaction was profitable, and that was the beginning of what would turn into the writing of over 10,000 timber contracts during his forming (1972) and building of Tri-County Logging/Hardwoods of Michigan. Many timber owners have had him or his representatives harvest timber on their woodlands two and three times during the 42 years that he owned and managed the company.
